I recently had the honor of attending Tony Bennett’s 90th Birthday concert in New York City at Radio City Music Hall. To say the night was electric would be an understatement. The capacity crowd was treated to one of the most star-studded musical events in history.

With Tony sitting in the front row, the curtain opened with a 52-piece orchestra. The one and only Lady Gaga performed “The Lady Is A Tramp”. Which brought the audience to its feet. Other greats who performed included Stevie Wonder, Michael Buble, Diana Krall, Andrea Bocelli, Kevin Spacey and, of course, Tony Bennett.

I love to see great artists in action. The love and respect these artists paid to Tony Bennett was special indeed.

Tony’s performance was fabulous. He has a way of bringing the audience into each note he sings. It was as if he was performing to me, personally. For his final song, Tony placed his microphone on the piano and sang a cappella – and projected his voice to the back of the venue. It was truly spectacular. Tony Bennett continues to raise the bar – recording new records and touring the world to sell out audiences.

His concert was a reminder to me that age is not a barrier when it comes to creating a life worthy of our time and commitment. While many of us use getting older as an excuse not to create what matters to us, Tony uses his creations as stepping stones to continue to create more (he also an accomplished painter).

Clint Eastwood, at age 86, just released his latest film “Sully”. Another great example that we can improve our skills and continue to create as we get older.

Recently, a young man came up to me after our show and said, “The band is wonderful. I used to sing in a band and I loved it. I’d love to do it again, but now I’m too old.” He is 33.

The next time you feel you’re too old to try something new, think about Tony Bennett and Clint Eastwood. The choice is yours, but I would encourage you not to make a choice because you think you’re too old. That’s a lame excuse.

Keep moving forward. The best is yet to come.
