What is your definition of a hero? I like the top answer submitted on Yahoo, “Someone who does something without thinking of himself or herself, without thinking of rewards.”
Recently Party on the Moon was involved in a tour bus accident. I’m glad to say we all came out of the accident okay. We did however total our coach and trailer.
As I looked out the broken coach window at 5:30 am on that cold, rainy Friday morning, a truck driver who was behind us made his way down the embankment to help. I will forever remember the concern in his voice as he asked me questions about the condition of my band mates.
That day I saw the best of the human spirit. The state troopers, fire and rescue, ambulance drivers and the staff at the hospital took a special interest in us. It was obvious that they loved their jobs.
I witnessed the hero spirit in the band as each member remained calm and showed more concern for each other than themselves.
We all have a chance to be a hero everyday: it may be holding the door, offering a smile to a stranger, coaching a little league baseball team or making a donation to a charity.
I like the bumper sticker “Practice Random Acts of Kindness.” The more we practice the better we will become.
The events in Boston last week remind us of how fragile life is and how in times of tragedy everyday people like you and me step forward to help strangers without concern for themselves.
We in Party on the Moon love our jobs as much as the state trooper and those that helped us in our time of need. We believe our work bringing music to the world is a healing force. It can heal us, bond us together and inspire us.
